Step 1: Choose the right machine

Check the label
In most cases, 60 degrees is ideal to get everything hygienically clean. If you're unsure, 40 degrees is also fine - that's often enough.

Step 2: The right detergent

Many people think: „A lot helps a lot“ and pour a lot of detergent into the machine. But this is often the reason why the blanket is no longer as fluffy after washing as it was before.

It is best to use a special Down detergent. This protects the natural fat of the feathers so that they remain elastic.

Take the blanket out briefly every 15-20 minutes, shake it vigorously and put it back in the dryer. If it still feels cool in one place, it is not yet completely dry.

In my laundromat, I see people washing their blankets every day. Many of them make the same three mistakes over and over again, which in the worst case can ruin expensive bed linen.

Drums too small and too much pressure

The classic: the blanket is forcefully stuffed into the washing machine until the door just closes. The blanket cannot unfold. The water doesn't even reach the core of the filling. You end up with a blanket that is wet on the outside but still full of dust and mites on the inside.

My tip
Always use a drum that is at least twice the size of the blanket when dry.

Fabric softener - death for every filling

I can't say it often enough: Leave out the fabric softener! Many people want their comforter to smell nice, but with down and modern synthetic fibers, fabric softener has the opposite effect of „fluffy“. It sticks the fine fibers and feathers together. The comforter collapses and loses its insulating power. It simply no longer warms you properly.

Underestimating the drying process

„Oh, I'll hang it on the clothes horse at home“ - a huge mistake. Especially with down, this almost always leads to the comforter starting to smell musty after two days because the feathers inside don't dry out and start to rot. Without the constant movement and hot air in a large dryer, you will never get the volume of a comforter back to what it was when you bought it.

How to prepare your comforter

Before you grab your blanket and head to the salon, there are two or three steps that make all the difference. Good preparation ensures that the wash penetrates deeper and the blanket really does look like new at the end.

The hole check

This is the most important point of all, especially with down. Check the seams of your comforter. Is there a small hole or tear anywhere?

There is a lot of movement in our professional machines. A tiny hole can quickly turn into a „snowstorm“ in the drum. Once the springs are out, the ceiling is ruined - and the machine is clogged.

Really check every corner. If you find a hole, be sure to sew it up first.

Pre-treat stains

My tip

It may sound logical, but I get asked this extremely often: Yes, take off the sheets! The blanket must be placed „naked“ in the drum. If the cover is still on, the water will not reach the filling properly and the blanket will never get really fluffy in the dryer because the cover slows down the air supply.
